Combined Emissions System
Conventional Analyzers 2 second response time
Fast Emissions System 55 millisecond response time
A need for fast emissions analyzers
Fast emissions analyzers are critical in the modern era as standard measurement equipment can miss the brief, high-intensity emission spikes where tailpipe emissions often occur.
With strict tailpipe legislation, compliance relies on controlling these rapid transient events, such as sudden acceleration, gear shifts, or the frequent engine restarts typical of hybrid powertrains. Fast analyzers provide millisecond-resolution data, allowing engineers to correlate emissions spikes directly with ECU behavior in real-time. This immediate feedback loop is essential for calibrating fuel/air and aftertreatment systems to eliminate "invisible" exceedances, ensuring vehicles meet rigorous standards without compromising performance.
Cambustion's unique products have been deployed in engine test facilities around the world for 40 years, leading to a wealth of in-house application experience and knowhow.
The solution
The Combined Emissions System is an integrated solution combining three 50-series analyzers into a single stack arrangement. The FID50 provides total hydrocarbon measurement by means of a flame ionisation detector (FID) and the CLD50 provides NO and direct NO2 measurement by chemiluminescence (CLD) and laser induced fluorescence (LIF). Finally, CO and CO2 measurement is done by the NDIR50 using non-dispersive infrared (NDIR). Individual heated link lines connect the analyzers to a heated sample splitter manifold (on the HSS50), from this a single heated line is connected to your sample point. 5 meters is the standard length, but custom lengths are possible.
A further advantage of Cambustion's solution is the ability to operate these analyzers individually, separate from the stack to utilise their full 15ms time response (3 meter sample line). This opens up possibilities for more dedicated or focused investigations.
Components:
- FID50 HC Analyzer
- CLD50 NO&NO₂ Analyzer
- NDIR50 CO&CO₂ Analyzer
- HSS50 Single Sample Line
Applications
In many applications, it is crucial to have a fast response time to detect and respond to changes in gas concentrations quickly. For example, in engine applications, fast response time is essential to monitor exhaust gases accurately and adjust fuel injection and combustion parameters for optimal performance, emissions control, and engine protection. A slow response time in this case could lead to poor fuel economy, higher emissions, and legislative exceedances.
The Combined Emissions System stack offers the ultimate solution in transient and fast response gaseous measurement with a broad range of applications. A versatile heated line system with adjustable cooling lengths allows for measurements in high temperature environments. Short resonance times within the sample line mean chemical composition is frozen at entry to the sample line, and there is negligible conversion of NOx species.
Data is comparable to conventional emissions equipment used for certification, but with the additional benefits of portability, time response and ease of use. Individual analyzers can be removed from the stack to be ran as a standalone product separately. Primary industry users are major engine OEM's and turbine manufacturers.
