Inhaled Nitric Oxide Therapy

Inhaled nitric oxide (iNO) has become one of the most widely used gas therapies in medicine, with recent technology now enabling both low- and high-dose delivery to breathing hospitalized and ambulatory patients. Nitric oxide is a potent vasodilator that improves oxygenation and reduces pulmonary hypertension, while its byproduct nitrogen dioxide is toxic and can cause respiratory distress or lung damage. As a result, accurate real-time monitoring of both gases is essential to therapy safety and effectiveness.

Modern sensors and analysers now allow healthcare professionals to continuously track NO and NO₂ concentrations, adjusting dosage promptly to deliver full therapeutic benefit while avoiding excessive NO₂ exposure. This precision also supports efficacy: by measuring gas levels accurately, clinicians can tailor dosing to each patient, whether delivering low doses for chronic respiratory conditions or high doses for acute respiratory distress syndrome.

Cambustion Ltd is a pioneering company at the forefront of providing cutting-edge solutions to the medical field. Leveraging their expertise in combustion analysis, they have developed a state-of-the-art, highly reliable, and fast nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) analyser that is revolutionizing the way these compounds are measured in medical applications.

Developed in collaboration with Massachusetts General Hospital, the RespiraNOx accessory was purpose-built to integrate with Cambustion's CLD50 analyser, extending its capabilities specifically for nitric oxide therapy research. The system pairs a medical-grade flowmeter with the CLD50's fast analogue outputs, combining flow and concentration data on a breath-by-breath basis to calculate real-time absorption of both NO and NO₂.

This gives clinical researchers a practical way to track two critical figures simultaneously and in real time during testing: the cumulative dose of therapeutic nitric oxide a patient has received, and the levels of potentially harmful NO₂ they've been exposed to. By resolving this data down to the level of individual breaths, RespiraNOx offers a level of temporal precision that supports more rigorous dose-response research and closer safety monitoring than concentration measurements alone.
