Since 2002 Cambustion have offered a range of aerosol instruments designed for aerosol science & laboratory applications.

The 2016 launch of the Aerodynamic Aerosol Classifier (AAC) adds a unique and novel measurement technique to Cambustion's range of aerosol instruments.

The Centrifugal Particle Mass Analyser (CPMA) has been adopted worldwide since its launch in 2012, offering researchers the ability to characterise particle density and morphology.

The flexible sampling capabilities and and rapid response times of Cambustion's established DMS500 and SCS systems make these highly suited to aerosol laboratory work, an application which has grown significantly as the research community seeks to update older equipment (e.g. SMPS).

Electrical Mobility Size Distribution Measurements

The SMPS (Scanning Mobility Particle SizerTM) by TSI is an example of a scanning instrument offering electrical mobility measurements, using a Differential Mobility Analyzer (DMA) and Condensation Particle Counter (CPC). Such a system offers excellent sensitivity, but requires around 60-90 seconds to make a single measurement.

Heavy duty diesel exhaust size spectra from DMS500

Cambustion's DMS series instruments offer real-time electrical mobility based particle size/number spectra. The Engine Exhaust Particle Sizer (EEPSTM) and Fast Mobility Particle Sizer (FMPSTM) instruments made by TSI operate on a similar principle.

The DMS500 and DMS50 offer excellent sensitivity at the small end of the size range. High charging efficiency and low diffusion losses through the use of sheath flows and high sample flowrates make the DMS Series particularly attractive when particles smaller than 50nm are to be measured.

Since the purpose of real-time instruments is to study rapidly changing particle spectra, Cambustion’s DMS series products are carefully designed to achieve the fastest possible fluidic response time and fast data rate (As low as 200ms T10-90% response time, and 10Hz sampling / 0.1 second resolution).

Together these make the Cambustion DMS series the solution for studying transient aerosol phenomena. The fully integrated dilution system and classifier interface seamlessly, with full control, measurement and data correction of all flows.

The DMS500

DMS500 for fast measurement of ultrafines between 5nm and 2.5 micron

With optional integrated dilution for sampling high concentration aerosols, heated sampling systems for sampling wet aerosols and high sensitivity for ambient measurements, the DMS500 is used in laboratories around the world for aerosol measurement, offering particle size distributions in the range 5 nanometres - 2.5 microns.

The DMS software offers unique real-time lognormal fitting, a feature which is of particular use when sampling artificial aerosols with narrow gsd.

Aerodynamic Aerosol Classifier

Aerodynamic Aerosol Classifier

The Aerodynamic Aerosol Classifier embodies a novel technique for classification of ultrafine aerosol particles according only to their aerodynamic diameter. This removes issues associating with charging that can complicate measurements such as electrical mobility.

Centrifugal Particle Mass Analyzer

Unipolar Diffusion Aerosol Charger

Unipolar Diffusion Aerosol Charger

The UDAC uses a corona discharge to place a high level of charge on an aerosol.

A key application couples the UDAC with a CPMA to provide a standard for aerosol mass calibration.

Filtration Efficiency Studies

Dual Sampling Accessory for multi-point sampling

Many aerosol experiments involve comparing the input and output of a piece of equipment.

The unique Dual Sampling Accessory for the DMS series allows electrical switching of the sampling location between two points- for example upstream and downstream of a filter.

SCS Smoking Machine

Smoking machine
The SCS is a standalone smoking machine, compatible with both electronic and combustible cigarettes and capable of reproducing standard and custom smoking regimes. The SCS can provide smoke to a variety of measurement equipment including the Cambustion DMS500 which offers real time measurement of particle size/number distribution together with realtime mass.

Aerosol Diffusion Dryer

Diffusion Dryer

Many laboratory aerosol experiments require the removal of moisture from aerosols, often with a requirement to avoid reduction of particle concentration during the process. (This can make dilution an unattractive solution.)

The Aerosol Diffusion Dryer uses silica gel to remove water from an aerosol, while maintaining high transmission efficiency of the remaining particles.

PSL Particle Size Check

PSL size check kit for aerosol sizer verification

Verifying the sizing accuracy of aerosol instruments is more difficult than for gas analyzers, since aerosols can not be stored. The commercial availability of Polystyrene Latex Spheres as NIST traceable size standards offers a comparatively convenient solution.

The PSL Size Check Kit offers a standalone means of nebulizing and drying PSL, allowing it to be presented directly to an aerosol sizing instrument.

Aerosol Precipitator

Aerosol precipitator

Many aerosol experiments require a means of removing pre-charged particles from the aerosol flow, either to prevent interation with downstream measurements, or to quantify the proportion of un-charged particles to allow compensation in data processing.

The Aerosol Precipitator uses an electrical field to precipitate pre-charged particles out of the flow, while allowing uncharged particles to pass through. It is often used in general lab work, or with the CPMA.

Cambridge Particle Meeting

Cambustion also sponsor the annual Cambridge Particle Meeting which is attended by aerosol and particle researchers from around the world.
