Analytical Instrumentation


Since 2002 Cambustion have offered a range of aerosol instruments designed for aerosol science applications.

New additions include the AF10 Aerosol Flowmeter – a practical addition for any aerosol lab – and the Mobility Separator Electrometer (MSE), a key component of the new Mass & Mobility Aerosol Spectrometer (M²AS) which allows unprecedented characterisation of non-spherical particles.

Thanks to some unique vantage points, the Aerodynamic Aerosol Classifier (AAC) and the Centrifugal Particle Mass Analyser (CPMA) have now become established instruments in aerosol and metrology labs, allowing the selection and characterisation of aerosol particles – beyond what is achievable with particle mobility classifiers alone.

The flexible sampling capabilities and rapid response times of Cambustion's DMS500 have found an increasing number of applications across different fields, both in the laboratory and in ambient air quality research.

The Smoking & Vaping Machine (SCS) is compatible with a wide range of products and is used both for product development and quality control applications, thanks to its flexibility and repeatability.

Cambustion's aerosol instrumentation range is completed by general-purpose products such as the switchable polarity Unipolar Diffusion Aerosol Charger (UDAC), the Electrostatic Precipitator with integrated high voltage power supply, the Aerosol Diffusion Dryer, and the PSL Aerosol Generator kit for rapid checks of instrument calibrations.

Aerodynamic Aerosol Classifier

The Aerodynamic Aerosol Classifier (AAC) classifies particles between 25 nm and > 5 microns according only to their aerodynamic diameter. The classification principle is independent of particle charge, such that typical issues affecting selection by electrical mobility (multiple charging and low charging efficiencies) are avoided.

Centrifugal Particle Mass Analyzer

Updated in 2020, the Centrifugal Particle Mass Analyzer Mk2 (CPMA) allows direct classification of ultrafine particles according to mass:charge ratio. The selection of particles with true reference to their mass makes the CPMA attractive for a range of aerosol science applications.

Fast Aerosol Sizer

The DMS500 offers users real-time size distributions between 5nm and 2,500nm at 10Hz, using the principle of electrical aerosol spectrometry.

The DMS500's ease of use and traceable data, combined with flexible integrated dilution system (with the sensitivity for ambient measurements, while supporting sampling of high concentration sources such as combustion burners) have seen hundreds sold worldwide since the first generation in 2002.

The UDAC uses a corona discharge to place a high level of charge on an aerosol for general aerosol experiments.

Smoking & vaping machine

The SCS is a standalone smoking and vaping machine, compatible with both tobacco / cannabis combustibles, heated tobacco products and electronic cigarettes and capable of reproducing standard and custom smoking regimes.

The SCS can operate standalone for basic product development, or be used to capture samples for a variety of measurement techniques including GC-MS, HPLC and more. The SCS is also deployed in quality control applications.

Aerosol Flowmeter

Many aerosol experiments come with a need to measure the flow rate of the gas carrying the aerosol, but most flowmeters are either damaged by particles or can affect the aerosol itself.

The new Cambustion AF10 Aerosol Flowmeter is designed specifically to measure aerosol laden gas flows.

Aerosol Diffusion Dryer

Many laboratory aerosol experiments require the removal of moisture from aerosols, often with a requirement to avoid reduction of particle concentration during the process. (This often makes dilution an unattractive solution.)

The Aerosol Diffusion Dryer uses silica gel to remove water from an aerosol, while maintaining high transmission efficiency of the particles.

Electrostatic precipitator for ultrafine aerosols

The Electrostatic Aerosol Precipitator uses an electrical field to precipitate pre-charged particles out of the flow, while allowing uncharged particles to pass through. 

The voltage may be varied by the user, resulting in a different "cut" diameter.

Many aerosol experiments require a means of removing pre-charged particles from the aerosol flow, either to prevent interation with downstream measurements, or to quantify the proportion of un-charged particles to allow compensation in data processing.

The ESP forms part of the CPMA Electrometer Reference Mass Standard.

PSL Aerosol Generator

The PSL Aerosol Generator offers a standalone means of nebulizing and drying PSL, allowing it to be presented directly to an aerosol sizing instrument.

The kit is able to nebulise a range of commercially available sizes of Polystyrene Latex Spheres as NIST traceable size standards.

Measurement of aerosol electrical mobility

The Mobility Separator Electrometer (MSE) allows an aerosol stream to be split in two, without loss of particles, while measuring the electrical mobility. Combined with other instruments the MSE enables accurate and time efficient measurements of properties of aerosol such as morphology, which are otherwise difficult with non-spherical aerosols.

The OZY-GEN ozone generator is a high-precision instrument that utilises the principle of dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) to produce ozone. An integrated ozone-metering cell and feedback loop, ensure ultra-stable ozone production compared to traditional generators.
