DMS50 Fast Particulate Spectrometer

Introduction to the DMS Series

DMS Series User InterfaceThe DMS500, launched in 2002 was the first of a new type of instrument. It combines electrical mobility measurements of particles with sensitive electrometer detectors, to give ouputs of particle size, number and mass in real time.

The DMS500 is ideally suited to laboratory or engine test cell applications.

The DMS50 builds on the DMS500 technology, offering similar features in a smaller package ideally matched to in-vehicle or mobile measurements.

DMS50 Features

  • Real-time measurement of particle size and concentration from 5nm to 560nm
  • Fast time response: 10 Hz sampling rate, 500ms T10-90%
  • Compact, 19inch rack mounting enclosure for mobile applications
  • Test cell integration via AK protocol
  • 12 V DC or 110/220VAC operation
  • Mass measurement and automatic aerosol mode discrimination

The Cambustion DMS50 is a new instrument based on the patented technology of the DMS500. It offers real-time particle size and concentration measurement in the size range 5nm to 560nm. In a compact, 19" rack mounting enclosure it is ideal for laboratory applications, integration in engine test cells, and with 12V operation is ideal for mobile and in-vehicle measurements.

The reduced size range compared with the DMS500 allows the instrument to work at close to atmospheric pressure, eliminating the requirement for an external vacuum pump. The operating principle is the well established measurement of particle size by electrical mobility, with unipolar diffusion charging and electrometer detectors.

The DMS50 may be supplied with an optional high ratio diluter, the same as proven in the DMS500 as secondary diluter. This affords a very wide dynamic range so the instrument is suitable for applications such as CVS tunnel measurements with no additional equipment. The dilution ratio is conveniently set from the instrument interface, and the DMS50 can automatically compensate for the dilution in the concentration measurement. For applications where multi-stage dilution is required, such as direct sampling from an engine, an accessory heated line / dilution module is available.

The DMS50 interface application runs remotely on a computer and integrates all control and datalogging functions. In addition, the particle concentration in any desired range can be output as an analogue voltage. Four analogue inputs allow logging of ancilliary data in the same datafile as the DMS measurement.

The DMS50 automatically discriminates principle aerosol modes. When applied to Diesel exhaust, this allows the Nucleation and Accumulation modes to be treated separately, thus enabling PMP comparable number concentration measurements without the use of a thermal diluter. The instrument also calculates real-time particulate mass concentration, which can be combined with an air flow signal provided to one of the instrument's analogue inputs to give a total mass signal as an analogue output or logged to file.
